Brisbane City Vibes
In this workshop, secondary students are invited to design and share their own creative endorsement of Brisbane City.
Students will create either an artwork or a marketing product, drawing inspiration from local artist Sebastian Moody’s body of work.
Students are first invited to work individually to engage their imagination and memories in a search for inspiration. In groups, they are then challenged to create, reflect on, and share artworks that respond to a brief. Finally, students analyse how their works convey meaning and impact audiences.
Inclusions
Workshop
The Brisbane City Vibes workshop invites students to be inspired by Sebastian’s artwork Sunshine Psychology (2021), exhibited as part of the City in the Sun exhibition in 2021. Ultimately, they are offered the opportunity to develop new insights into the roles of emotion and aesthetics in both art making and marketing.
There is the option for the workshop to include a live presentation by the artist for an additional fee, depending on availability.
About the Artist: Sebastain Moody
From his Artist Profile for his gallery representation Onespace:
“Sebastian Moody’s artworks draw on words in their presentation and aesthetic. His use of ambiguity and multiple meanings prompt the viewer to consider both what we think and why. Born in Sydney in 1979, Moody currently lives and works in Brisbane where he completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at QUT (2001) and a Master of Museum Studies at The University of Queensland (2009).
Moody has been creating artworks in the public realm since 2002. His KEEP THE SUNSHINE (2015) farewells departing travellers from Brisbane International Airport and THE MORE I THINK ABOUT IT THE BIGGER IT GETS (2009) defines a tunnel in the Fortitude Valley.
His art provides opportunities for philosophical contemplation in busy urban environments. These commissioned works respond to their physical context and are sufficiently memorable to stay with the viewer. Equal parts gravitas and humour, his text is always concise and digestible. Offering statements that challenge as they reassure, Moody nudges his audience into a critical awareness of self—one that, in its honesty, cannot help but acknowledge an individual point of view that is unique in its construction and, yet, essentially common in its discursive origins.” (source Sebastian Moody | Onespace)
The ‘Brisbane City Vibes’ workshop is inspired by Sebastian’s artwork Sunshine Psychology (2021) exhibited as part of the City in the Sun exhibition.
About the artwork:
Sunshine Psychology playfully subverts marketing campaigns that have sought to link Brisbane’s psyche with the sun. Sebastian has created an intentionally ambiguous phrase that slips between a slogan, an outlook, a state of mind, a solution, a brand, a joke and a poem. Its meaning, or lack thereof, is open to interpretation. The gentle, shifting gradient of the LED letters embody the hypnotic effect of marketing psychology, with its bright lights and alluring colours. The words play on the positivity often associated with sunshine and bright skies, while commenting on the monopoly that Brisbane tends to claim over the sun.
